Last Tuesday Microsoft discontinued support for Windows 7 ten years after the official release. The Redmond company is urging users to update their PCs to Windows 10, but there is a legal and free procedure for doing so.
How to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 for free
- Downloaded the Media Creation Tool on Windows 7 and start it;
- Accept the license terms proposed by Microsoft;
- Click on “update this PC now”, not on “perform a new installation”;
- Click on “install” and wait for the end of the procedure.
After several reboots, Windows 10 will be installed on the PC. It is possible to check the activation status from “Settings”, “Updates and security” and “Windows activation”.
The procedure only works if an original and activated version of Windows 7 Pro, Home or Ultimate is installed on your computer.
A former Microsoft employee said that the offer of the update is no longer advertised, but still remains active, and in fact, many still have managed to upgrade completely free of charge. The Redmond company would also be aware of this “bug” if it can be defined as such but still would not have corrected it to push the updates.
On Reddit, a user pretending to be a former Microsoft employee confirmed this, and also said that the head of the Windows division would be focusing more on ” update statistics rather than license revenue “.
The update must be carried out keeping all the files on the PC. Formatting the PC could lead to loss of advantage.
