After working together on The Fighter and American Hustle, star Christian Bale and screenwriter and director David O. Russell will reunite for the filmmaker’s next project, which will be produced by New Regency.
The production would also have contacted Jamie Foxx and Angelina Jolie to join Bale in secondary roles, while the first choice Jennifer Lawrence, historical collaborator of O. Russell, due to previous commitments would have given way to co-star and now would be Margot Robbie the first choice for the part.
Collider also reports that the project’s tentative title is Amsterdam and that the story will follow the unlikely collaboration between a doctor and a lawyer. Matthew Budman, who has produced numerous films for Annapurna Pictures, will produce Russell’s film for New Regency, which will distribute the project under the general agreement with Fox / Disney. Filming is scheduled to begin in April, which a) would allow the film to re-enter the 2020/2021 awards season and b) would not conflict with any Bale Marvel Studios engagements: as you know, the awarded actor Oscar is in fact one step away from joining the cast of Thor: Love and Thunder, whose filming is scheduled for July / August.
Bale won an Oscar for his supporting role in The Fighter. In his latest film, Ford v Ferrari, he appeared alongside Matt Damon, and the two helped James Mangold pocket an Oscar 2020 nomination for best film of the year. Russell’s latest film was Joy, released in 2015 and starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper.
